Welcome to this week’s chat corner!

Optional prompt

This week, the topic is “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story“, AKA the first SW movie outside of the Skywalker saga. Interestingly, it was also the first not scored by John Williams.

Thoughts? Supplemental canon recommendations? Fic recs?

I would be quite interested in getting some fic recs on this.

It's interesting that Williams didn't score it, though maybe it was intentional given the timing of its release.

One of the things that intrigued me about Rogue One at the time is exactly that it was not part of the Skywalker saga. I had not yet seen the animated series so to me it was interesting as a view of the verse that was different from what we'd previously seen.

two recs!

rook; for rookie (448 words) by ctmisi (may be archive locked?)
Chapters: 1/1
Rating: Teen
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: gen
Summary:
some of the men who teach him have the same face.

short little prequel for Bhodi showing some of the glimmers of resistance that might exist within Imperial forces. Probably more meaningful if you’ve watched the clone wars but can stand alone.

Something Mysteriously Formed (30233 words) by kaasknot
Chapters: 1/1
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Chirrut Îmwe/Baze Malbus
Summary:
The Force begot one.
One begot two.
Two begot three.
And three begot the ten thousand things.
(Or: an account of Chirrut Îmwe's formation, his alliance with Baze Malbus, and his resistance against the Empire; and most significantly, a thesis on the origins of hope.)

A longer fic centering around Chirrut — starts right before the end of ROTS but since its set on Jedha which ROTS extremely does not care about you don’t need any particular knowledge of the movie to follow

Rogue One was a decent sw side story movie. However, I do have some criticisms of the movie itself, from the casting choice of Jyn Erso. I thought her acting performance was bland. Also why was this movie too close to ANH? Just seems too on the nose. Disney shouldn’t “recontextualise” previous canon, just build upon it. The visual effects for the time was a bit uncanny.

Are we still having dark side posts? I don’t mind a space to just be critical of Disney SW content.

I agree about Jyn. I had a really hard time connecting to any characters in R1 besides K2.

LOL same :D

Same, tho it was cool seeing cameos of established characters but that’s it for me. It was still over all a decent movie, but would I read fanfics? Nope.

Ah, ok. I can always look in the permanent dark side post.

To be fair the acting performance is not the fault of the actor, it lies with the director and studio who ultimately hired them. Plus, in fanon, people write characters a bit differently. It’s subjective.

I've probably said this last time but like, I didn't really get into it the first time I watched, we sort of knew how it would go and there were no big surprises. But upon rewatching I cared more about the character arcs. So it's still my favorite of the Disney-era stuff although the bar is really not set very high there.

The novelization is fun, in addition to the stuff that gets quoted a lot ("Galen Erso reprogrammed me," "the simulation pleased him") we have a detail about Bodhi's pilot friend Misurno getting a little tipsy one night and telling Bodhi he's his best, and only, friend. I ship it!

This was my first SW movie and the only one I've watched in cinemas! It was an enjoyable enough two hours, but I fundamentally didn't connect to the characters, so while I was rooting for them to succeed, I wasn't rooting for them to live, if that makes sense. I don't think I've ever gone looking for fic. The bit with Vader massacring his way through the corridor at the end was super great, though.

Oh I hated that "choke on your ambitions" line! :D But I agree about the hallway scene after it was so hyped up. Maybe it was better in the theater?

For me, the hallway scene was the only bit where I actually cared. The urgency of these people trying to complete their mission before their certain death was palpable, and in a way that hallway scene was basically just the preceding movie, but better: I cared much more about the disposable people shoving plans through jammed doors than any of the R1 crew, and Vader was a more visually impressive dispenser of death than the big kaboom. In essence, the scene was the entire preceding movie, thematically and plotwise, but better.

And yes, it looked amazing in the theater. (Though Vader's appearance from the gloom is great even on the small screen.)

That's it--I cared as much about those anonymous people on the corvette, fleeing Vader, as I did the Rogue One crew. The hallway scene is definitely good! And one of my favorites in the movie. I'm glad we got the chance to see Vader unleashed. I just don't follow when people go on and on about it :)

(This is shameful to admit, but I think I first watched R1 on an iPad or laptop--the tiniest screen, basically, which did not help, lol)

I think it's one part that we see Vader do his thing and all the Vader fanboys went hearteyes, and one part that (some) people genuinely care as much, if not more, about the anonymous people than the Rogue One crew, so it sort of outstaged the rest of the film.

What made it impressive for me seeing it in theatre was that we weren't expecting it.
Prior to the movie release we were told that Vader would be only in the movie sparingly and so the scenes with Krennic were all I thought we'd get.
So you could imagine how cool it was to see that scene opening night if you hadn't seen the spoiler leaks.

For sure! I imagine on the big screen, not knowing what was going to happen (and having had more Vader in the movie already than you probably anticipated), it was incredible. I'm sorry I didn't see R1 in the theater (I'm forgetting when in the timeline of releases it came out, so I can't remember if I was still feeling burnt from the prequels or if it was the sequels, lol), but if I had the chance I would take it now.

I guess that's what happens to overhyped things - they can never be as cool as the thing one built up in one's mind. It was the coolest scene in the movie, and I was also considering mentioning the dad joke, lol. R1 really delivered on the Vader content.
