Welcome to the Monday chat corner!
This week, lets return to the animated TV show Bad Batch* Do you watch it? Do you like it? It feels like Disney is following two directions with its TV shows: animated for younger audience and live-action for older viewers. What do you think about that? Which of these approaches do you like more - or do you enjoy both equally? (Or perhaps neither?)
* I know, I know, the second season aired in the spring, the hype is deader than a dead thing. I have reasons! I try not to bring up shows that have just finished airing in the main chat post to avoid spoilers.
If it were something I was actively watching I would make a separate post for it (like we've done with The Book of Boba Fett back when it aired) but er, I don't really have the batteries to watch SW stuff as it airs anymore.
Maybe that's not ideal, though? Would you prefer I bring up things as they air? If you have a preference please weigh in, I'm happy to change my approach if it will work better for you.

Date: 2023-12-18 07:39 pm (UTC)In terms of posting about something recently aired, I think it's fine to post about it whenever. It could always be posted about in more than one time period -- like when it's currently airing as well as later when more people have seen the whole thing.

Date: 2023-12-18 08:38 pm (UTC)With the exception of the Mandalorian and Andor (and Book of Boba Fett, for reasons of being hot for Temuera Morrison and Ming-Na Wen--logistically, it would also have been better animated), I would prefer Disney to do more animated than live action, TBH. Ahsoka should have been animated, Kenobi was fine, but I think I would have enjoyed it more if it were animated.
I think however posts go up is fine! If it's spoilery, we can mark it for people who want to avoid.

Date: 2023-12-18 09:35 pm (UTC)i think sometimes they flip a little too hard between their serious episodes and the more light-hearted, kid friendly ones. but that's a problem that all of the SW animated shows have and i think it just a consequence of it being nominally for kids. the tone occasionally gets jarring. even the shows that have more consistent tone that are loved across the board do this sometimes. (looking at you atla...)
that said, there have been some real interesting things they've done with tbb. the episode with cody and crosshair is legitimately one of the best episodes of anything star wars i've seen. i was thoroughly impressed by what they did with mayday too, specifically how they made a character charismatic and compelling enough to get people intrigued and attached in such a short amount of time. that's hard to do.
ooh and the whole thing with palpatine and rampart. the ending of that was such a nice "you technically know where this is going but not how it's gonna get there" ending.
i also really appreciated the ep in s2 where tech and omega talk about how tech reacts differently to things. basically acknowledging his neurodivergence without using that exact word.
speaking of tech, i was spoiled for the end of the season way before watching it but somehow managed to avoid the details enough that it still caught me off guard when it happened. and the delivery was so good, major props to DBB, it almost made me teary.
i'm intrigued to see where they go with it. tbb will probably never be my favorite of the SW shows--i'm just not as attached to most of the characters like i am others--but they've got an interesting plot going. i really want to know where they go with it.
and i want to see if they do anything with delta squad in s3 because i love delta squad so much and i'm constantly making sad faces at my screen because we get glimpses of the commandos but not even a singular voice line like in tcw 8((
.... this is a very long comment i'm now realizing. whoops.

Date: 2023-12-19 01:47 am (UTC)As someone who hasn't been following the Disney TV shows, it doesn't make much difference to me, so I'd say go with what works! In general, I am pro-animation; it sucks that animation tends to get looked downed on as being "just for kids" in the US, because I think it works better than live-action for the kinds of stories Disney wants to tell.
