Welcome to this week’s chat corner!
Optional chat prompt
This week’s topic is the Marvel comic series “Doctor Aphra”, both the 2016-2019 run and the 2020- ongoing. Have you read it? Do you like it?
Since this is the first comicbook in the chat prompts, what do you think about SW comics in general? There have been a ton, pretty much since year one - the release date of the first comic actually predates the first movie! (April 12, 1977 and May 25, 1977) Do you read them, or are you interested?
EDIT: Lest I confuse anyone who remembers that this week is supposed to be Legends content, I did a dumb: Doctor Aphra (both runs) are very firmly canon. (Which I knew, it’s just that I’m disorganized as all heck.) Apologies!

Date: 2021-06-14 06:16 am (UTC)Which, incidentally, was inspired by a fanfic I'm writing: "Chosen One (derogatory)", where Asajj Ventress (post TCW) travels back in time and proceeds to involuntarily save the galaxy. (It started with a crack fic premise and then it went sideways into found family feels. I have no regrets. It's also the only fic on AO3 for its ship, which does not surprise me - because crack - but amuses me greatly.)
(you know, since I keep encouraging people to shill their work here.)

Date: 2021-06-16 07:32 pm (UTC)Oh yeah, money... tbh I haven't read Aphra yet because I'd either have to find scans or buy it; I'm trying to avoid the former, and I haven't been interested enough for the latter. Comics are not a cheap hobby.

Date: 2021-06-16 08:21 pm (UTC)I am in *no way* looking down on the good old .cbr format. I've read more comics than I care to count via the method of scans.

Date: 2021-06-17 05:23 pm (UTC)Oh, definitely, nothing against scans! Scans are life.
I feel a bit bad about them for newer stuff that's still available, because I know how hard is to do all that art, that's all I was trying to say. I have nothing against people scanning and reading things as scans! That stuff costs a lot, the way readers are counted is notoriously broken so runs get cancelled even when people buy trades, and often it's almost impossible to actually buy older stuff because it's not in print anymore! I have a few series I'd pay for but can't, simply because it's a less popular series from the early 2000s and nobody will ever reprint it.
*inhales* ...I used to be a comicbook fan can you tell XD

Date: 2021-06-14 01:42 pm (UTC)Tho I have read somewhere that there was some au where Han and Chewie crash landed on earth. Chewie became Bigfoot while Han’s descendant is Indiana Jones.

SW comics seems to be a world on its own, so I think a lot of fans don't read them. It's a bit obnoxious if you're completist, because they're considered canon now (not like when you hade the movies and everything else was EU, e.g. dubious), but eh. I try not to be.

Date: 2021-06-16 07:42 pm (UTC)There has been a lot of books, it seems, so I'd say the usual bell curve would apply (e.g. most of it being very average in quality). I've used to own a huge pack of SW ebooks, and I could hardly comprehend just how many books there were. It got lost somewhere between one computer and the next, at least a decade ago I think. I'm still a bit bitter about that, I'd love to take a look at it again now.

Date: 2021-06-15 02:03 pm (UTC)I liked a lot of the Dark Horse runs that were going in the early-mid 2000s; their Darth Vader run was good, and I really liked the Clone Wars comics. I've been meaning to revisit that to see just how much of it was eventually mined for the TV show -- I know Maul's storyline and the thing with the general who went dark were similar in the comics. Of course, though, no Ahsoka in the comics!
I think I have a bunch of these comics in Mom's shed, I should revisit them and see if they're still good! I did a Buffy comic re-read this spring so Star Wars is probably next in line ...
My custom mood theme is comics!Vader. I don't think I can link to it directly but if anyone wants it I can try to dig up the zip file.
