Welcome to the Monday chat corner!

Today is movie time: the topic is the first of the Sequel Trilogy movie, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”. If you’ve been here last time we’ve talked about it, do you have any new thoughts? If not, what do you think about it?

By the way, the movie premiered in December 2015, which means it’s now over 7 years old. It’s been a while! Have you seen it in the cinema? What was it like?

Wow, time needs to stop going by so fast.

I remember that before going to see it in the theater the one thing I gathered from reviews was that the film was a rehash of New Hope. And I think that was largely true, but at the same time the changes were significant. It's not only because we got different characters in different positions when the story started, but because the movie wasn't the first in a series, it had some legacy effects which no "starting" movie could claim.

At the same time the likelihood that the movie, no matter what it was, would have the same impact on me as New Hope was low. But I left the theater satisfied that at least it was no Episode 1.

I was so dead broke that I just knew it was going to be the first one I did not see in theater. My now-wife was a lovely dear and took me on her dime. (Either its sequel or Solo was when I broke from seeing them in theater, though I went to Rogue One twice)

I was WOWED, and I had SUCH HIGH HOPES for the direction they'd chosen to go, despite some quibbles. I fell in love with Finn and Rey. I wanted SO MUCH MORE of them being the heroes of their generation, or forging the new trinity with Poe.

Saw it twice in theaters. Really enjoyed it, even though it had some obvious flaws at the time. Less fond of it now because I know that the potential storylines I thought they were building were merely... place holders. Interesting ideas that no one had taken the time to plan out.

I liked hating Kylo Ren because he made my little niece cry when he killed Han Solo. HOW DARE HE MAKE MY NIECE CRY?! (I wouldn't have taken her to see it at that young age, but it wasn't my call to make.)

Very much agree with this - I liked it a LOT the first time I saw it, was super hyped leaving the theater, bought it on disc when it came out... and like it less now based on what came after. It's still the one of that trio I like the most, though, and the only one I'd probably rewatch if the urge hit.

I saw it multiple times in theaters, including a premier (they didn't have a midnight premier, it was like 7pm, lol). The theater near me actually renovated all of its seating to be those big comfy recliners specifically for this movie. They played it round the clock for probably an entire week. I went in costume (a kind of cobbled-together costume, not a high-quality cosplay, admittedly), and I wasn't the only one. It was a great atmosphere being there with all the fans.

My opinion on the sequel trilogy as a whole is pretty meh, but at the time I enjoyed it and thought it was a decent set-up for a new adventure. I just wish they'd had a more concrete plan for all the things they set up in it, rather than winging it and going in wildly different directions depending on who was at the helm.

Rey calling Luke's lightsaber to her during the final fight really got to me (I saw TPM in theaters as a 7 year old who was very into fencing and martial arts, while I've always loved the lady-Jedi of the expanded universe they'd never been the focus on the big screen), so that earns it some points in my book. Also, while Han's death made me sad I thought it was a really nice bit of writing & cinematography.

I had very strong "wait, are they really just rehashing A New Hope? Why?" feelings when I first saw it, lol. I was also one of those people who was a bit sad about the death of the old EU. So in 2015 I was just not feeling it. Now that all the characters and era have grown on me, I enjoy it a lot.

Seven years omg!

I really liked this one when I saw it at the cinema.

Kylo as a villain who wants to be the next Vader was pretty meta. And him killing Han was a great scene.

Finn being a defected stormtrooper had so much potential. A pity they used that for a throwaway joke and nothing else.

Ah the halcyon days when this was the only film and there was so much excitement about where it was going. Sure there were lots of structural flaws in the film itself but there were so many interesting ideas in it and intersting characters. And I remember particularly being really excited by this idea they present when Kylo killed Han about the like inherit draw of the Light. The previous two trilogies had been very much about the power and seductiveness of the Darkside and the desire to hurt people who hurt you and embrace power for powers sake and here was Kylo talking about how hard it was to resist the desire to forgive and ask for forgiveness and want to make amends and do good. And that was kind of reflected in Finn's story about leaving the first order (and if it had actually been planned and built up could have tied into Rey being a Palpatine). And I was so excited to see how they would go forward with that theme it was such a cool idea and inversion of the trope.

I remember watching that movie at midnight. The anticipation was fun. Unfortunately later that same day, my dog passed away.
