Welcome to this week’s chat corner!

Optional prompt

This week, I finally get to my last category of prompts (yes, there is a system): the movies! We’ll go by in-universe chronology, so our topic is “Star Wars: The Phantom Menace”, aka Episode I, aka the one with little tyke Anakin Skywalker, Jar-Jar Binks, and midichlorians. Like it? Hate it? Don’t care about it?

I rewatched it recently, and it's a better film than I remember (and Jake Lloyd actually does a pretty decent job, considering his age and the fact that some of his dialogue is really quite clunky). The set and costume design work is spectacular.

I'd say the pod race scene goes on just a bit too long, and the least said about Jar-Jar the better, but it's an engaging enough film with some really strong elements.

What I did like about Episode 1 was introducing Naboo, which is my favorite planet in Star Wars.

Yee! Also I find the politics and culture fascinating.

Imagine if the one of the queen’s handmaidens is ~force sensitive~ tho… 🤔 could make an interesting au.

Oh yeah one can write all sorts of fun plots with the handmaidens! So much interesting potential

Indeed!

On a side note, I wondered what if Luke was raised with his mom’s family, as a Naberrie. Sure he probably wouldn’t be a farm boy but he’d still yearn for the adventure and go on that hero’s journey.

They let Padme run for office at what, 13? So he would probably have had a bit more freedom growing up (Padme's politics also make me think her parents might have been at least tangentially involved in the resistance, after her death). But on the other hand, they already lost one kid to the empire at a young age so they'd likely be more conservative in what risks they were willing to let him take.

So he might end up about the same, but with more expensive fashion taste :D

Exactly, you raised some good points. His grandparents and aunt and uncle would be a bit more protective of him. At the same time, I imagine them implicitly rebelling and being academic/intellectual.

So yes, Luke would mostly remain the same, just a bit more fashionable, “book smart”, and he’d know how to swim.

oh i'm sure they gave him a holdout blaster and some lessons but there aren't any womp rats on Naboo (as far as we know haha) to practice on

I rewatched the series last year because my SO hadn't seen all the films. And as I wrote then:

"I had seen the first in the theater and the unbelievable letdown of it made me chuck any further interest in Star Wars for a decade. When I watched it again with Mike, I wondered if my expectations had led me to dislike the film.

No. It's just that terrible. There were some remarkable visuals and costume design but the writing is dreadful and wastes a largely good cast. "

I maintain that the worst (star wars related) decision George Lucas ever made was divorcing & then firing his wife. A better editor could have done wonders for the prequel trilogy

but I love all the complicated political bits of the prequels (a blockade over trade disputes? sign me up)

This can totally relate to ep 1 but do you ever wonder about the cuisines of various planets?

Like for example, I headcanon Nabooian cuisine with breads, pastas, and fresh fruits due to the temperate climate.

Kinda curious which planet would have the spiciest foods lol

I rewatched it a couple of years ago and my favorite minor detail was the podracing announcer with two heads. One does play-by-play and one does commentary! :D

The theme of "we're all symbiotic, humans and midichlorians work together, also humans and Gungans need to work together too" is not bad for a kids' movie.

Edit: also, it gave us Weird Al's "The Saga Begins" which is definitely a point in its favor!

Not a bad movie if you pretend it isn’t Star Wars! Also, sparked a lot of great fic as well as the Jedi Apprentice series, which is acutely quite fun and held up to my reread in 2018.

I don't think JA made Qui-Gon particularly evil, though he wasn't always the best possible guardian for Obi-Wan! He has an unfortunate tendency to be neglectful and preoccupied. It's also possible there may have been a story arc where he went bad (or appeared to) for a hot second, but I can't actually remember. I think a lot of fic villainizes Qui-Gon much more than is directly supported by JA/Legends canon.
