Chat corner 98: Rebels

Welcome to the Monday chat corner!

This week the topic is supposed to be some canon, non-movie content. The third season of The Mandalorian would be the obvious choice, but I’m wary of spoilers in the main discussion. Besides, there’s only been one episode so far!

(thanks [personal profile] fleurviolette for reminding me it’s a thing, by the way, I’m impressively out of the loop :D)

Therefore, lets be a bit ~creative~, and talk about Star Wars Rebels, AKA the TV show The Mandalorian is mining for continuity. Do you like it, do you dislike it, how do you think the newest bit of SW media will tie to it? (Or will it at all?)

I think this was the 2nd/3rd Star Wars I consumed, after the KOTOR games! I found it mostly kind of basic, though I did persist long enough to watch through to the end. I then watched TCW and enjoyed it on average more, probably because while TCW had a wider ensemble, it was Ahsoka's show and Rebels was Ezra's, and I just didn't like him as much. But: funny fact! All this means I encountered Maul in reverse chronological order. As a result, when he turned up in TPM, I did not go "omg skary :o" but "hey, it's Ezra's evil uncle! :D"

I hadn't really thought Mandalorian was connecting that much to Rebels until this opening episode (and the callback is subtle enough that any non-Rebels watchers will probably just wonder about it). LOVED the callback though!

Of course Mandalorian can technically connect to most of SW lore and canon, especially since the final trilogy is yet in the future. And it does reference it in, say, what Ahsoka tells us but at the same time Ahsoka herself starts much earlier.

Ah yes, I hadn't even thought of that. There was a fair amount about Mandalore itself in both Clone Wars and Rebels and I hadn't thought of the Dark Saber specifically.

Well, there is one detail that ties Rebels to Mando, as well as teases the upcoming Ahsoka series.

I wouldn’t too surprised if Sabine’s family make an appearance later in this season, given the Mandalore subplot.

Most likely she’ll appear in the upcoming Ahsoka series. But there’s a small chance if it makes sense to the story for her to appear in Mando season 3.

I also watched episode 2 of Mando, which was a fun lore building episode about Mandalore.

I haaaaate all the tie-ins. Mandalorian was better before it became a continuation of Rebels, although the second season did so in such a way that (on the whole) allowed viewers to skip Rebels (or not even know it existed) without sacrificing anything. Now, however, you must watch seasons upon seasons of a different show, and I'm not really interested in being coerced like that, lol. Doesn't help that Mando 3 is pretty bad :/

ETA: take me to the dark side lol
