Chat corner 11: Our favorite space dad

Welcome to this week’s chat corner!

 

Optional chat prompt

The topic for this week is The Mandalorian, the show that gave us the tired, confused space dad and his horrible gremlin child, and a whole lot of feels. (Unless you’re into it for the “western in space!” vibes, of course.)

And as last week, feel free to share and chat about fanworks! If my memory is to be believed, a certain technically-a-crackship dominates the fandom, but if that’s not your cup of tea, I’m sure there’s more to be found.

Since this show had its share of… drama, shall we say, if you need to vent the Dark Side post is there for you.

I have posted the first chapter of the Prequels WIP I've been talking about, Sing Dead the Dark! The estimated end length is about 25k. T-rated gen, Anakin Skywalker-centric prequels fixit. Also has a bunch of R2-D2.

I haven't read any Mandalorian fic yet so am totally in the dark about the dominant ship. But I would welcome gen recs.

Also, a friend has just finished watching the show and says that she'd like to know how she can get the earworm of the theme out of her head. Also, she said she never watches credits of any other show, but does it with this one because she loves the art. I also found it interesting to see how the concept art did and didn't match what ended up on screen.

That song is SO catchy! I've binged the first season, and then I went on youtube a few days later to specifically listen to it again, because I was just so hooked on it. :D

I looked into my stash and found two fics you might like:

  • Almost Home - Din & Grogu, drabble (from the last Multifandom Drabble Exchange)
  • a faint trembling - Din & Grogu -- I think I found it on AO3 through sorting by kudos, so I'm sure I'm not being much help here XD, but it IS rather good.

The random-est of The Mandalorian fic recs

I'm a gremlin so my fanfic favorites are often really hard to recommend to people, but hey, who knows?

  • a republic (if you can keep it) - it's the 5th fic in a series with the premise "what if Obi-Wan stayed to live with the Larses" and it would be a loss to read it alone, but I LOVE that series, and Din's "who the fuck are you people?" in this is hilarious.
  • The Once and Future King - time-travel fic where Din is kicked back to Mandalore, gets a ghost for a parent and Jedi Master, and meets a preteen Jaster Mereel. Folks, I don't know. But it's so good. (It starts a bit slow tho, don't give up on it too early if you try.)
  • Ka'rta Ve'vut - an E-rated Armorer/Ahsoka Tano fic. Come for the tags and the interesting rarepair, stay for the metallurgy metaphors. (And okay, yes, the smut.) (Is it weird that I think the metallurgy is more enjoyable than the smut? Because IT IS.)

Read it and gave you a kudos :D I think I'm missing a lot of backstory for the SW:TOR bits, but I really like how you write Anakin. "never uttered a witty quip in his life" is going into my Anakin character notes (and it cracked me up XD).

My beta also had no clue about SWTOR, so it *should* all be readable without the SWTOR background. (Some stuff that will be revealed later would be obvious to a SWTOR player, basically.)

I'm glad Anakin worked for you! He is a disaster and I'm surprisingly fond of him. The thing is, he has actually uttered quips witty and not so witty, but he spends so much time standing next to Obi-Wan that he just doesn't register himself as a quipper due to the contrast. But yes, any observations are 100% stealable for others' character notes!

Aww, maybe I'm being a bit mean to him :D It might be because I'm working on a fic with movie!Anakin, specifically Ep II, and that boy couldn't be less smooth if he tried.

Oh yeah, all his quips come in Ep III. In Ep II ... well, he has yet to acquire any social skills. And being a bit mean to Anakin is lots of fun!

I had the theme stuck in my head for weeks after watching the show.

As for recs, I would recommend pretty much anything by fanfoolishness. They write mostly Din & Grogu -centric gen with a fair dose of h/c.
